What causes Periodontal Disease?
Plaque is
the chief cause of periodontal disease and is
composed mostly of bacteria. If not removed daily,
the bacteria in plaque multiply into colonies.
Specific types of bacteria in plaque produce
substances toxic to the gums and bone that hold the
teeth in position.
When did it start?
Despite unparalleled
advances in dentistry and breakthroughs in research,
periodontal disease remains a serious dental health
problem. Nine out of ten people are afflicted by it
in the course of their lives. It has been called an
insidious disease because it sneaks up on people.
Very rarely do people complain of discomfort
associated with the disease and therefore it often
goes unnoticed. That is why it is important to treat
the problem as soon as it is diagnosed.
Is treatment uncomfortable?
Our office
recognizes that when you first come to visit us, at
the height of your problem, you are anxious and your
gum tissues are often sensitive. We go to great
lengths to assure that your visits are comfortable,
starting with a warm friendly greeting, taking the
time to explain treatment and encouraging
communication. If you have any apprehension
regarding therapy please discuss the various forms
of sedation with the doctors.
Will it be cured?
Most periodontal diseases
are similar to diabetes in that you can't be cured
but can be simply controlled. As you have learned,
you are susceptible to gum disease. Daily oral
hygiene including brushing and flossing will keep
the formation of plaque and calculus to a minimum,
but it will not completely prevent it. No matter how
careful you are in cleaning your teeth and gums,
bacterial plaque can cause a recurrence of gum
disease from two to four months after your last
professional cleaning. To keep your teeth and gums
healthy, we must check for potential hidden problems
and remove any residual plaque. During this
maintenance appointment home care, including
brushing and flossing, will be reinforced. We will
work closely with your restorative dentist to
develop a personalized program and determine an
appropriate time interval for you.
